No longer Europe’s embarrassing, malnourished sibling, dining in Britain has come a long way in the last 20 years. From business trips to citybreaks, whether in Leeds or Manchester, you’ll have the chance to experience some of the finest restaurants in the country. To help you navigate the gastronomic delights of each tasty town we’ve put them head to head in a cuisine contest…
Round 3 – Restaurants
Corner Cafe, 104 Burley Road LS3 1JP
Located near Roomzzz Leeds City West, this understated Indian restaurant offers personal service and bespoke dishes, and a pint from the pub next door.
Mumtaz, Clarence Dock, LS10 1PJ
The original restaurant behind the world’s most famous curry brand is in nearby Bradford, but Leeds’ well situated addition to the chain is well worth a visit too.
Anthony’s Restaurant, 19 Boar Lane, LS1 6EA
Family owned, family run and critically acclaimed. Since opening in 2004 Anthony’s has developed a reputation for the most stylish fine dining in town.
Jamie’s Italian, 35 Park Row, LS1 5JL
Little introduction is necessary, but when the latest of Jamie Oliver’s restaurants landed in this old bank, Leeds’ culinary culture was forever changed.
Salvo’s, 109-115 Otley Road, LS6 3PX
Winning ‘Best Neighbourhood Italian Restaurant’ on Gordon Ramsey’s F Word and serving more than two million customers, over three decades, speaks for itself.
The Cedar Tree, 69 Thomas Street, M4 1LQ
A rather bizarre interior marries office-ceiling chic with fake foliage in this backstreet secret famed for its mouthwatering Lebanese menu.
New Samsi, 36-38 Whitworth Street, M1 3NR
Manchester takes oriental food seriously. Options are plentiful, but if you ask locals where to find the best samurai steak or Bento box, it’s invariably New Samsi.
Mr Thomas’ Chop House, 52 Cross Street, M2 7AR
Enjoy al fresco dining in the summer overlooking St Anne’s historic churchyard, or move in from the cold for fine English food in this Victorian tiled pub.
The Lime Tree, Lapwing Lane, M20 2WS
If West Didsbury is Manchester’s culinary capital then this classy modern British establishment is top of the pile, making the trip south of the city well worth it.
Grado, New York Street, M1 4BD
Heathcotes’ reputation for quality, fresh ingredients is legendary, and the Spanish and Tapas menus at Grado are no exception. Nor is the extensive wine list.
The final whistle blows after a close fought battle. We’ve enjoyed drinks in the best bars, nights in the best clubs and, finally, food in the finest restaurants Leeds and Manchester have to offer. Now all that’s left to say is enjoy your stay, and if you find anywhere we’ve missed, feel free to let us know.
