Love isn’t love until you give it a day

Temperatures are rising, and it’s not just the climate that’s heating up. As one of the finest hotels in Leeds city centre, and a gem in and amongst the many Manchester city centre hotels, we know that love is in the air above both cities.

February 14th is fast approaching, and we all know what that means. So get your creative cap on, not to mention a card for your loved one, and prepare to engage in a night that should end passionately.

Valentine’s Day is a difficult one to plan, restaurants have a habit of getting booked up, and as for the cinema… well, good luck turning up sans tickets to any screening, whether that’s morning, noon or night. But if you stick to these simple suggestions that special someone should have a real evening to remember…

Love in Leeds

Before you walk, arm in arm, through the door of some fine eatery to indulge in oysters it’s important to set the mood. This means if you don’t have a car, get a taxi, and leave that bus pass at home. Pre-dinner drinks are the best way to create a relaxed atmosphere, though maybe keep an eye on the quantity. Try Epernay in the Electric Press, Millennium Square- its selection of 45 champagnes should impress.

Once you’re done there, it’s time to soak up some of those bubbles. There’s an abundance of quality restaurants in Leeds, though we’d say it’s important to pick somewhere that’s conducive to wooing. Seafood is an obvious, though wholly classic choice, and there’s only one place to punt for. Live Bait offers an exceptionally fresh catch to sink your teeth into, so seek out The Calls, and then head down Shears Yard (after booking a table that is).

You’ve (fizzy) wined and dined (exceptionally well). But before you call it a night leave the perfect lasting impression with one last, sophisticated drink. You’ve already uncorked a few bottles, meaning any more could leave you, and your wallet, feeling worse for wear. Head to the city’s original cafe bar, Art’s on Call Lane, for a mellow toast. It’s been providing something of a Parisian vibe to locals every evening since 1994, need we say any more?

Amour in Manchester

After establishing a meeting point it’s time to choose your first venue. This is no mean feat, as the city boasts countless bars suitable for such an event. While there are plenty of contenders, we’d say starting the date at The Gaslamp on Quay Street should stand you in good stead. A listed building, recent refurbishments have re-invented this once dilapidated Victorian gem, meaning it’s now the perfect place for an intimate chat in front of open fires.

Now for the food, and we’ve got an ideal venue in which to woo. Head to Tib Lane for Lounge Ten, one of the best kept secrets in town. A listed building complete with stunning facade, the architecture matches the classic elegance of the food, which, like the vibe of the place, is inspired by Paris of the late 19th Century. Think decadence, red velvet, crystal chandeliers, wall-length mirrors and sexy artwork to get you in the mood for romance.

By now spirits will hopefully be high, and neither of you will want to wind things up any time soon. So how about a low-lit, basement bar famed for cocktails and canapés to finish the night? Obsidian is hidden away underneath Princess Street, just around the corner from Roomzzz Aparthotel. Once found, descend the stairs into this contemporarily designed bar that’s a regular hang out for Manchester’s many movers and shakers.
