Capturing their first of two Grammys as Best New Artist of 2005, and going on to sell more than ten million albums worldwide, Maroon 5 won plaudits with the hybrid rock/R&B sound they introduced on their debut album Songs About Jane.

Listeners can expect this sophomore outing to be “sexier,” “stronger” and even “lyrically darker” than Jane, according to vocalist/guitarist Adam Levine, who affirms that “it’s rooted in what we’ve always been, which is different.”

Things to do in Manchester… before Christmas ends

Posted on: No Comments

With the flick of a switch every town in the UK changed. Christmas is finally upon us, which means things are about to get a whole lot busier.

So get ready to get festive. And, if like us you love this season, then you know it’s the perfect time for a city break. So why not indulge with a long weekend, and stay at our hotel in Manchester that marries a serviced apartment with a luxury hotel.

If you visit the north’s largest city right now, it doesn’t take long to notice the streets have been transformed into a winter wonderland. But with so many high-profile activites going on, and plenty more besides, it takes some planning to ensure you don’t turn a fantastic trip into a stessful day spent trying to decide what to do, and when.

Those looking for a touch of the traditional this Advent should seek out the understated exterior, and the impressive interior of Manchester Cathedral. Founded for its current purpose in 1847, late November and December are, naturally, the busiest time of year here, with a calendar crammed full of events. Attend Evensong under the breathtaking pulpit, or take in the gothic surrounds of this historic building at your own pace by day, and light a candle to spread the Christmas spirit.

If retail therapy as oppose to spiritual therapy is more what you’re looking for, then Manchester is the place to be. Selfridges not only boasts several floors of shopping heaven and a sumptuous food court, but you can now also grab some exclusive Lego jewellery, or a L’Oreal advent calendar. What’s more, from November 25th, 10 Days of Play launches with complimentary beauty treatments being given out.

Outside and the now-famous Christmas Markets will be dominating pavements with hog-roasts, bratwurst grills and a plethora of bars. All things Northern European, edible, drinkable and gift-able will be on offer until December 21st, making this an essential activity. We’d highly recommend a roast pork and apple sandwich, along with a glass or two of gluhwein to warm yourself up while you peruse the vast array of stalls.

Away from the city limits and a visit to the Chill Factore in Trafford is perfectly suited to the season. Pop into Santa’s Grotto before hitting the slope in preparation for that forthcoming ski trip. Or alternatively, make like it’s the Winter Olympics, and take advantage of Britain’s foremost luge run for some high-speed fun.

Once all that’s over you’ll probably be getting pretty peckish. As such it might be an idea to head back into town, and check out Mr Thomas’ Chop House. Here you will find the finest cooked meats around, all served up in this thoroughly Dickensian, Victorian-tiled pub. What could possibly be more festive than that?

Sankeys night club, Manchester

Posted on: No Comments
From the theme clubs of Peter Street to the underground club nights in the Northern Quarter, Manchester’s nightlife has matured since the ‘Manchester’ area, when the Hacienda and the Boardwalk us on the clubbing map.

Now groundbreaking events like Electric Chair (Music Box), Romp, Twisted Elegance and Tribal Sessions & Sankeys Saturdays (both at Sankeys Soap) take place each week; the indie nightclubs like 5th Avenue, 42nd Street and the The Venue provide the indie connection and an ever growing array of underground nights cover from house, hip-hop, and everything in between.

Saturdays at Sankeys feature a mishmash of overground and underground house music for the masses. Friday nights (Tribal Sessions) tend to belong to the jeans and trainers brigade, but the Sankeys Saturdays are more ‘dressy’, i.e. do your hair. The slow evolution of Sankeys has been good for the venue – with more seating, aircon and the ever-tweaking of the huge Phazon sound system (previously installed at Home in London, this big-rig was shipped north when the club was infamously closed down).

Electronic Artist – Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Recorders – Manchester Art Gallery

Posted on: No Comments

Saturday 18th September 2010 – Sunday 30th January 2011

Recorders is a major new exhibition by Mexican-Canadian electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. The artworks in Recorders see, hear and feel the actions of people around them, using technology to create a playful yet ominous experience. This solo exhibition features seven recent pieces by the artist, including the world premieres of two specially commissioned new installations.

Lozano-Hemmer’s artworks depend on the participation of visitors to exist and develop, as the artist describes:

“In Recorders, artworks hear, see and feel the public, they exhibit awareness and record and replay memories entirely obtained during the show. The pieces either depend on participation to exist or predatorily gather information on the public through surveillance and biometric technologies.”

Highlights of the exhibition include Pulse Room, on show in the UK for the very first time. Made up of 100 light bulbs activated by a sensor to flash at the exact rhythm of particpants’ heart rates. Also, the work People on People (a co-commission by Manchester Art Gallery and Abandon Normal Devices festival), a major new installation inspired by portraiture and shadowplays, which will turn the gallery’s temporary exhibition space into one of the world’s most advanced scanners.

Manchester Art Gallery is the only UK venue for this show, an interactive experience not to be missed! Plus free of charge!!!

Visit Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s website to find out more about his work.
