Things to do in Manchester… before Christmas ends

Posted on: No Comments

With the flick of a switch every town in the UK changed. Christmas is finally upon us, which means things are about to get a whole lot busier.

So get ready to get festive. And, if like us you love this season, then you know it’s the perfect time for a city break. So why not indulge with a long weekend, and stay at our hotel in Manchester that marries a serviced apartment with a luxury hotel.

If you visit the north’s largest city right now, it doesn’t take long to notice the streets have been transformed into a winter wonderland. But with so many high-profile activites going on, and plenty more besides, it takes some planning to ensure you don’t turn a fantastic trip into a stessful day spent trying to decide what to do, and when.

Those looking for a touch of the traditional this Advent should seek out the understated exterior, and the impressive interior of Manchester Cathedral. Founded for its current purpose in 1847, late November and December are, naturally, the busiest time of year here, with a calendar crammed full of events. Attend Evensong under the breathtaking pulpit, or take in the gothic surrounds of this historic building at your own pace by day, and light a candle to spread the Christmas spirit.

If retail therapy as oppose to spiritual therapy is more what you’re looking for, then Manchester is the place to be. Selfridges not only boasts several floors of shopping heaven and a sumptuous food court, but you can now also grab some exclusive Lego jewellery, or a L’Oreal advent calendar. What’s more, from November 25th, 10 Days of Play launches with complimentary beauty treatments being given out.

Outside and the now-famous Christmas Markets will be dominating pavements with hog-roasts, bratwurst grills and a plethora of bars. All things Northern European, edible, drinkable and gift-able will be on offer until December 21st, making this an essential activity. We’d highly recommend a roast pork and apple sandwich, along with a glass or two of gluhwein to warm yourself up while you peruse the vast array of stalls.

Away from the city limits and a visit to the Chill Factore in Trafford is perfectly suited to the season. Pop into Santa’s Grotto before hitting the slope in preparation for that forthcoming ski trip. Or alternatively, make like it’s the Winter Olympics, and take advantage of Britain’s foremost luge run for some high-speed fun.

Once all that’s over you’ll probably be getting pretty peckish. As such it might be an idea to head back into town, and check out Mr Thomas’ Chop House. Here you will find the finest cooked meats around, all served up in this thoroughly Dickensian, Victorian-tiled pub. What could possibly be more festive than that?
