The best city entertainment

Newcastle

Chris Ramsey
If you’re spending the weekend in the area, what better way to enjoy your Friday night than laughing along to one of Newcastle’s favourite sons, Chris Ramsey. The Geordie stand up heads back to his hometown for this intimate concert at the city hall on 21 March.

Franz Ferdinand
After seeming to disappear for a number of years after initially bursting onto the scene with their 2005 album You Could Have It So Much Better, Franz Ferdinand have made somewhat of a resurgence of late, and on 27th March, head to the Newcastle O2 Academy.

Elbow
Over a decade since their Mercury-nominated debut album Asleep in the Back was released, the Manchester band are still receiving critical acclaim, and head to Newcastle on their latest chart topping The Take Off and Landing of Everything tour. Playing at the O2 Academy in an intimate warm up concert, the five piece play the small venue on 31 March, and tickets are likely to be limited.

Leeds

Miranda Hart
Another comedic offering to line up for your weekend city break, arguably the biggest name in female comedy heads to Leeds’ prime venue this month. The set of dates at the First Direct Arena still have tickets available, and with showings on both Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd March, you can easily plan your weekend around the performance timings.

Johnny Marr
It’s not often that rock royalty heads to Leeds, so when someone of Johnny Marr’s musical calibre heads to the city, it’s tough not to snap up tickets. The former Smith is playing one of Leeds’ smaller and newest venues, playing at the popular Belgrave Music Hall on the 24th March.

Manic Street Preachers
The renowned Welsh rockers have enjoyed just short of 30 years of success career in the industry, and with hit after hit still rolling into the charts, the three piece band from the South Wales Valley play First Direct Arena on Friday 28th March.

Manchester

OneRepublic
Arguably the American pop band of the year, OneRepublic have received masses of airtime since releasing their newest album, Native last year. With hits ‘If I Lose Myself’ and ‘Counting Stars’ receiving many plaudits, their catchy style of alternative pop heads to Manchester on Friday 21st March.

Bombay Bicycle Club
Since establishing back in 2005, Bombay Bicycle Club have seen a rapid rise through the music industry. Having progressed from smaller venues throughout their inaugural ‘I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose’ tour, the band have rapidly risen between 2008 and the present day, to the extent that their recent tour was performed on a global scale. Heading to Manchester on Friday 21st, make sure you grab a ticket for their Albert Hall date.

Tinie Tempah
This rescheduled concert was due to take place back towards the back end of 2013 finally arrives in Manchester on the 28th of March. With hits including ‘Pass Out’, ‘Wonderman‘ and ‘Written In The Stars‘, this is one concert you won’t want to miss.

December: A month in music

Posted on:

Winter is well and truly here, and although that means many of us will confine ourselves to warmth, to others it means the arena concert scene is well in full swing. If you’re planning a musical themed weekend away, take a look at the music events coming up around three of the UK’s major northern cities. From mass popularity bands to something a little more refined, we’ve got your evenings sorted.

Leeds

If you’re looking for music in Leeds, look no further than the array of talent on show at the First Direct Arena this month. To kick off, on the very first day of the month, Xmas Party Live showcases a grand evening of pop music with  the likes of Example, The Saturdays, Eliza Doolittle, Conor Maynard, McFly and Rudimental all being pegged for the line up. If modern pop doesn’t take your fancy, Irish quartet Boyzone head to Leeds on the 9th, and you can grab your tickets for £35 if you want an evening of 90′s pop.

US smash hit show, New Jersey Nights comes to Leeds as part of the UK leg of their world tour, which is a spectacular celebration of the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and takes the audience on a nostalgic musical journey through the career of one of the biggest selling groups of all times. Head to the First Direct Arena on the 4th of the month if the glitz and glamour of the States is more to your liking this December.

Newcastle

If a bit of old fashioned rock music is more to your liking, then this month’s highlight at the Metro Radio Arena is Status Quo & 10cc, who combine to put on a show on the 19th on December. Joining the Quo this month, Scottish pop rockers Wet Wet Wet head to the Toon on the 17th, along with special guests for the night, Blue.

Arguably the biggest name hitting the arena this month, JLS will say goodbye to Newcastle in style with their performance as part of the group’s farewell tour. If you’re a fan of the XFactor originated group, be sure to snap up a ticket soon for as little as £25.

Manchester

At Manchester’s Phones4U Arena this month, an array of musical performances are on offer, with something to suit every taste. If you aren’t a fan of the modern radio-played pop hits, and prefer your heavy metal to any other genre, then Bullet for my Valentine’s performance on the 1st December may take your fancy. Similarly, if you’re a fan of old school heavy rock, December 18th sees the legendary original line-up of Black Sabbath perform a string of classic hits along with new tracks from recently released album, 13. Other pop performances are on show throughout the rest of December, with Will.i.am hitting the stage on the 3rd, DJ’s Tiesto & Calvin Harris light up the stage on the 21st and the Key 103 Jingle Ball takes centre stage on the 12th, as big name artists such as Robbie Williams, Pixie Lott, and Jason Derulo contribute to the ensemble cast concert.

If you’re planning a night of music this month, make sure you check out our website for a luxurious end to your evening.

Dinner

Blackhouse Bar and Grill

Blackhouse truly is one of Leeds’ best restaurants. Located in the city centre, Blackhouse’s Grill on the Square offers both heated outdoor and spacious indoor seating, allowing you to enjoy a meal and drinks in a relaxing environment with a great ambiance.  With a vast range of wines to accompany your meal, even the connoisseurs amongst us will be spoilt for choice. Food choices range from traditionally cooked steaks to fajitas and moules frites. To kick off your meal, why not opt for either calamari or Thai fishcakes as a starter, they come highly recommended.

Fazenda
Fazenda Brazilian steakhouse has fast become one of Leeds’ most talked about restaurants. Offering an ‘all you can eat meat’ experience, diners are treated to vast selections of cuts and sides for a set price. It might not be cheap, with the cost coming in at £25.95 per person through the week, and rising to £27.90 on weekends, but with surroundings far classier than your standard buffet, and a great location in Granary Wharf, the restaurant is fast becoming a favourite for the residents of Leeds. Grab as much steak as you want, whilst not even having to leave your seat, as Fazenda’s waiters tend to your every need.

Drinks

Skylounge
Sitting on the top floor of Hilton’s Double Tree Hotel in Granary Wharf, Skylounge provides arguably the best view of the city. With unbelievable views over the Leeds night sky, enjoy your sociable drink whilst taking in the sights of the city. If the weather is kind enough, you can even take a seat in the balcony seating area, and absorb some of the night-time sounds of Leeds.

Curvee
A trendy wine bar targeting a higher end clientele, Curvee offers a selection of premium wines. Specialising in red, there is plenty of choice for the wine lover, with a tipple to suit any palette. Whether a pre-meal beverage, or winding down after eating, head to Curvee on Granary Wharf for a classy drinking experience.

Dancing

The Wardrobe

Built in a semi-derelict building used for storing the West Yorkshire Playhouse’s props and costume department – hence the name, The Wardrobe is a club that offers a music scene to rival any in the country, priding itself on being an intimate club for musicians to perform at. With a style showcasing everything from folk, to funk and soul, reggae, hip hop and everything in between, The Wardrobe has played host to some amazing and historic shows. With a resume to contend with the best of Leeds night venues, past gigs have included the likes of Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey-Rae and Beverley Knight. There’s nowhere in Leeds like it.

HiFi
With an emphasis on quality music, The HiFi is a nightclub well worth visiting when in Leeds. Having won awards for being a music venue, the bar and club provides an enjoyable location for your post-dinner entertainment.  Not the typical rowdy club that makes socialising impossible, HiFi is the kind of place that allows you to grab a few mates together with a genuine appreciation of good music and dance the night away.

If you’re preparing for an evening of food and entertainment in Leeds, make sure you check out Roomzzz Aparthotel for a luxurious end to your evening.

Things to do on Halloween in Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle

Posted on:

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time for you to get your plans into full swing. Whether you’re looking to head into the city centre, or for something a little different, we’ve handpicked some of the best Halloween events taking place in Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle.

Leeds

Harvey Nichols – Halloween Film Night at Espresso Bar

Harvey Nichols fourth floor espresso bar is hosting a Halloween film night on the 31st October. The movie, Edward Scissorhands, will be playing at 7pm while customers indulge in a delicious three-course meal. The evening will cost £24.50 and a £10 deposit will be required when booking. If a film and meal isn’t enough to satisfy your Halloween needs, the event finishes in plenty of time for you to head into Leeds and sample some of the best outfits donned by party-goers at events such as The Voodoo Halloween Showcase at the O2 Academy.

Paranormal Investigation – Leeds Town Hall

If you’re wanting to take a different approach to a night out this Halloween, the first ever paranormal investigation is taking place underneath the Leeds Town Hall in the Victorian Cells. The event runs from 8.00pm till 2.30am with light refreshments available during the breaks. Throughout the night you will experience ‘table tipping’, an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) session, a Ouija board experiment to contact spirits, along with many more spooky activities. This special event will cost £45.00 per person, and will definitely be a night to remember!

Manchester

Grosvenor Casino Murder Mystery

On the 26th October, the ‘Most Spooked’ murder mystery is taking place at the Grosvenor Casino in Salford. Consisting of a ‘murder’ and a two-course meal, this dining experience, which only costs £17.95, is set to be more unusual than most. Individuals interrogate each other and will slowly unravel the crime as all the evidence is exposed. The night runs from 7pm to 10:30pm, leaving you plenty of the night to head back into Manchester if the mood takes you.

Querky! Halloween Special- Tiger Tiger Manchester

If Halloween fancy dress is your thing, and you think of yourself as an expert costume designer, why not show off your skills on your Halloween night out? Head down to Tiger Tiger in Manchester for their Halloween Querky event, where the best dressed guest of the night will bag themselves £500. Not bad for a nights work!

Newcastle

Halloween Drive-In Movie Theatre

From the 31st October to 2nd November there will be a variety of scary films showing on the newly established drive-in movie theatre in Bents Park. With two viewings each night, the movies generally commence around 6pm or 9pm. Tickets are £20 per car or £24 if you wish to be in the front row. A variety of food is also available (just don’t drop it on your seats!). Give your Halloween experience a taste of America with this rare event.

Halloween Night Ghost Walk

On the 31st October, a Halloween ghost walk is taking place in the Castle Prison and Dungeon Séance. The castle is considered to be one of Newcastle’s most haunted places, and has hundreds of real-life stories linked to gruesome evidence. There will be Ouija boards, EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) recordings and a creepy tour of the historic castle by candlelight. Tickets are £10 if you book online and £15 on the door, with the walk taking around an hour and a half to complete.

If you’re readying yourself for a big night of Halloween festivities, or are heading for a night out in Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle, make sure you check out Roomzzz Aparthotels for a luxurious state – and end – to your evening.

October: A month in music

Posted on:

With the dark nights drawing in and winter restricting your options when it comes to evening activities, we take a look at the music scene around three of the UK’s major northern cities. From arena sell-outs to local smaller venues, we’ve got your evenings sorted.

Leeds
Although the new First Direct Arena is now officially open for business, the musical acts don’t get into full swing until November. However there are still plenty of smaller venues in the city. Head to the O2 Academy website for an array of artists, DJs and nights out available. Having received widespread acclaim for their debut album Bad Blood, Bastille are heading to Leeds’ O2 Academy on the 21st October as they blast out crowd favourites Pompeii and Laura Palmer. Concerts from Suede, Travis and the Goo Goo Dolls are highlights for the rest of the month, so make sure you check online for tickets to make sure you don’t miss out.

Newcastle
The Arctic Monkeys head to Newcastle’s Metro Arena as our top pick of concerts for October. The Sheffield rockers roll into Newcastle for a performance on the 22nd October. Tickets for the event sold out immediately upon release, with UK concert dates proving to be like gold dust, however if you can find a ticket at an official resale retailer online, it’s a no-brainer to go and see the Yorkshire four piece on this leg of their world tour. Another big name hitting the Geordie music scene this month is Jessie J, whose performance on the 26th is a rescheduling of her cancelled gig from March this year.

Manchester
Big name stars Billy Joel and Peter Gabriel hit Manchester later this month, providing ample entertainment for fans of 70′s and 80′s music. World famous pianist Billy Joel’s stop in Manchester is one of only three English dates, so tickets are sure to be in high demand, but are currently still available. Having embarked on a solo career after leaving rockers Genesis prior to his 1977 debut solo album, Peter Gabriel has enjoyed a long and successful career. Be sure to catch him in Manchester before he ends his tour and takes a sabbatical from the music industry.

Be sure to plan your concert night in advance, and if you’re looking to stay in the city rather than begin the drive home late at night, visit Roomzzz to check for vacancies.

“1 night stay”
5 of 5 starsReviewed 16 January 2012
Stayed here for one night with a friend in November 2011 as we wanted a night out in Leeds. Staff was very friendly and helpful and the location of the hotel was great, it was 15 mins walk to the city centre and 2mins in a taxi which was very cheap! We even got to stay an exta 2 hours in the morning for £10.00 which I thought was ideal with a hangover! Rooms are very modern, spacious, clean and tidy. Could not fault this aparthotel at all! :)
