Yesterday we asked our Manchester Facebook fans, ‘which insect is connected to Manchester?’ Someone suggested the Museum Mummy! But no the symbol of Manchester is the bee!
The Manchester bee symbol was adopted during the industrial revolution, a revolution that Manchester was at the heart of. The bee denotes Mancunians hard work and graft during this era and Manchester being a hive of activity in the 19th century. A mosaic hive of bees is depicted on flooring in the Manchester Town Hall.
Bees are known are hard workers with a vital role to play in the ecosystem and the ability for humans and life forms to survive by pollinating crops. The allegorical link to bees relates that during this era, Manchester was a vital economic centre for Britain and many Mancunians were employed in a range of jobs in the city.
Although it is unverifiable, the idiom busy bee may have originated or at least been popularised as a result of Manchester’s adoption of the bee symbol.
The architecture of our Manchester Roomzzz is testament to this era, see photograph below!

Struggled finding the hotel but called the reception on route, the receptionist provided excellent directions and we arrived within a matter of minutes.
Check in – quick and easy, receptionist polite and informative.
Room – 505, was located on the top floor and was amazing, clean, and spacious and very well thought out, a/con helped as room on the top floor and was quite warm. Apple mac computer including free wi-fi was a very nice touch not to mention the TV in the bathroom!!
Location – Excellent would recommend for any occasion in Manchester.

And to prove it… here’s the latest review for Manchester
on 20th July from Beverley T in Kent:
“I travel for work every week all over the country, and everytime I am in Manchester this is the place I choose. I simply won’t look elsewhere. I’ve tried most hotels and apartments in Manchester (my previous preference until I found Roomzzz was the MacDonald).
The apartments are modern and spacious and I’ve stayed in virtually all from the cheapest right to their most expensive/largest. I’ve never had a room that wasn’t fantastic.
The staff are friendly and helpful (especially Keith) and I can’t recommend this place enough. The location is fantastic just a short walk from the shops and the station. The mini shop in reception is always welcome when I am in need of a snack and the breakfast is all you need to get you started. If you want eggs and bacon – cook it yourself!!
I’ve stayed many times, and will stay many more. This place is everything you need at a really reasonable price.
Room Tip: If you want a bath – remember to ask as not all rooms have them.”
