Evening entertainment in Manchester

Manchester is a city of great culture, and the abundance of theatres, shows and musical events in the city make it a great city for a weekend break for any age group. The coming month has a lot to offer, so whether you’re a fan of music, of a gripping theatre experience, we’ve got you covered.

The Palace Theatre

The story of Britain’s greatest and most iconic ever band is playing between at the historic Palace Theatre in Manchester. Let It Be incorporates the iconic music of The Beatles and gives you hours of spectacular performance, packed with over 40 of The Beatles greatest hits. Having enjoyed a successful run on London’s West End, this international hit show invites you along to celebrate the legacy of the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band. Described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘A non-stop parade of hits’ this show is a must for any fan of British music. Tickets prices for the show range from £16.90 to £47.90 and runs from 28th of February to the 8th of March.

Manchester Opera House

Heading to the Manchester Opera House at the end of March, Kindertransport is a stunning story of 1930’s Germany combined with 1980’s England. Starring big names from the world of Television, including Maggie Steed (Stella, Jam and Jerusalem, Pie in the Sky) and Janet Dibley (Doctors, EastEnders, The Two of Us), the story begins in pre-war Germany as the clouds of conflict begin to gather and a torn mother forces her nine year old child onto a train to avoid the danger of an impending war. Also examining a peaceful suburban England where another mother faces a similarly tough situation, Kindertransport has drawn huge critical acclaim from influential titles including The Times and the New York Times. Running from 25th to the 29th of March, tickets for the show can be picked up for roughly between £12 and £32

Manchester Apollo

If you’re after something a little less formal over the upcoming month, the Manchester Apollo has a range of great musical acts on show. Fresh from their Brit Award for the best British breakthrough act, Bastille play two nights at the famous Apollo venue. Despite a relatively small back catalogue to choose from, the band are renowned for their live performances having learned from the experience of supporting Muse on their UK stadium tour. With hits such as Pompeii and Laura Palmer, tickets are well worth hunting out for their 28th February and 1st March dates.

If you prefer something a little less contemporary, but in a similar alternative rock style, a month later sees the hugely successful Welsh band Manic Street Preachers at the Apollo. Having been a commanding figure within UK rock scene for the best part of the last30 years, catch the successful rockers out on 1st April.

Daytime entertainment in Newcastle

Newcastle is a vibrant and exciting city which is frequently a destination of choice for people looking to take a weekend city break in the UK. Angel of the North

One of the most iconic landmark in the UK, you’ll pass the Angel on the drive north to Newcastle. Just ten minutes outside the city limits of Newcastle, the nearby location means you can easily nip out to visit the contemporary sculpture and return to the city within a couple of hours. The iconic 66 ft Anthony Gormley piece was described as having three-fold significance ‘first, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries; second, to grasp the transition from an industrial to information age, and third, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears’.

Bamburgh Castle

If you’re wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre for an afternoon, then take the hour long drive up the North Northumberland Heritage Coast and pay a visit to Bamburgh Castle. With breathtaking views and true history on offer, you can spend hours exploring the castle and grounds of this Grade I listed building.

St James’ Park

If you’re in the city for the weekend, then make sure you plan the date to correspond with a Newcastle United home fixture. The Premier League outfit might not be perennial title challengers, however over recent years have played some great football which has seen them challenging for a place in Europe. With a capacity of over 50,000 and a rich history including greats like Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan, join the Geordies for 90 minutes of passion fuelled sport.

Intu Eldon Square

If you’re after an afternoon of shopping, Newcastle offers a number of options. If you want the shopping centre feel, Gateshead’s Metro Centre is a short drive away, however if you plan on a casual window shop in the heart of the city, Intu Eldon Square has a host of big name fashion brands along with all your high street favourites. The indoor centre compliments the retail on offer through the city centre, so whether you’re after the latest fashion trend in All Saints, or just want a browse through Next, you have plenty of options available.

Valentine’s Day in Leeds

Valentine’s Day is almost here, which means that for the loved-up couples amongst us, there isn’t long remaining for you to plan a romantic evening or weekend away. Whether you’re wanting ideas for the Friday, or you’re planning to get away for a whole weekend, here are some potential locations if you’re looking to wow your partner.

Dinner

Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor Café

Harvey Nichols exudes an air of exclusivity and the Leeds store, which was the first outside of London when it opened in 1996 provides an atmosphere of class and style. This feel carries through to the in-store restaurant. Located on the fourth floor of the store, the cafe offers a truly special dining experience. At £80 per couple, the Valentine’s meal at the Fourth Floor Cafe is reasonably priced when compared to other city centre locations, and the menu boasts impressive dishes such as smoked duck breast and crab risotto. Bibis

One of Leeds’ most iconic restaurants, Bibis Italianissimo is the place many head on a special occasion. With its stylish interior, you can enjoy a Valentine’s meal in style and comfort on either Friday 14th or Saturday 15th. If you’re in Leeds for the weekend and want to begin your celebrations early, Bibis  is offering a lunchtime menu for your special occasion, and The New Vintage Band will be performing throughout the weekend, providing a great atmosphere as you enjoy a delicious two course meal, complete with a glass of Prosecco. With a full menu on offer, and the evening being  specially themed for Valentine’s day, you won’t struggle for choice. A romantic and high quality cinema evening, Everyman is offering a Valentines package including a film, champagne and chocolates on the 14th. The popular independent cinema is giving you the chance to enjoy a choice of romantic films from the comfort of its trademark comfy sofa seats. With Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Romeo + Juliet and The Bodyguard all showing, you’ve got a choice of screenings for the big night, so make your evening one to remember at Everyman, with tickets costing £55 per couple.
