Trans Pennine Trail

Morning! Have woken up trying to decide what to do over the Easter weekend, there are so many things I could do I’m having trouble whittling them down to a manageable size! Here at Roomzzz we look forward to the long weekends, we like it when our guests stay for a few nights and it got me to thinking about having the extra couple of nights for a Bank Holiday weekend and how if I was staying in Leeds I might want to pop over the hills and have a look at Manchester whilst I have the time… this then lead me to think about the many ways I could do this!

Now of course I could just jump in my car and head across the M62 but where’s the fun in that? So I thought about getting the train, there are two routes I could take one connects into Manchester Victoria – this route goes along a valley bottom through Halifax and Hebden Bridge, it’s a very pretty journey and the station itself is worth a look! The other goes to and from Piccadilly – this is the most speedy journey but is nonetheless scenic – why not get off at Stalybridge and check out their infamous buffet bar? And then there’s the less conventional way of crossing the Pennines… the Trans Pennine Trail, a path which traverses the hills from Southport in the west through Liverpool and Manchester, you can take in Sheffield, Leeds, York and Hull before finishing up on the east coast in Hornsea! Now how you do this is very much up to you… no cars though… it’s two legs, two wheels or four legs to get you along this track!

So I’m away to book a stay in Roomzzz because at the end of the day, however I get across the Pennines I can be sure that my evening will be fabulous!

The Leeds Kitchen

It would be fair to say that we here at Roomzzz like our food and that here in Leeds we are more than spoilt for choice of amazing places to dine. This weekend sees the launch of another gastronomic delight… mixing fine dining with a slice of celebrity as James Martin – star of Saturday Kitchen – opens his new restaurant in the city.

The Leeds Kitchen, will be situated at the Alea Casino in Clarence Dock, is set to open to the public on Saturday 9 April 2011, and will provide a fine dining experience in stunning surroundings.

James as you may know is a devout Yorkshireman having recently had the honour of being made a Yorkshire Patron, James’ new venture has already contributed to the City of Leeds employment drive, with over 25 experienced chefs and front-of-house staff recruited in preparation for opening and all suppliers for the venture are also locally sourced.

Expressing his excitement, James Martin said: “I am delighted to be opening my new restaurant at Alea Casino, Leeds.

“It’s a stunning venue and has everything under one roof. What better way to put the icing on the cake – excuse the pun – by launching my new venture there!

“As I’m a born and bred Yorkshireman, I have been searching for the right location for some time and Alea and Clarence Dock have everything I am looking for. I can’t wait to open shortly, and deliver – along with my team – some of the best of British cooking Leeds has experienced.”

Quite frankly we can’t wait… we’ll be joining the first to sample the new restaurant and are practically drooling in anticipation!

What’s on Manchester….

Yesterday I focussed on what you can do in Leeds and Yorkshire throughout April and over those lovely bank holidays we’re getting! Now today as I was rumaging through the internet to look at Manchester I found a list of the best things you can do free of charge… as you know we love luxury but we also go wild for a bargain so I thought I would share this list with you!
  1. John Rylands Library – A gothic sandstone building on Deansgate recently juxtaposed with a clever modern visitor centre. This fabulous legacy of Cottonopolis was commissioned by Cuban-born Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her philanthropist textile manufacturer husband. There’s more about Manchester’s first multi-millionaire and some fascinating changing exhibitions in the cathedral-like public reading rooms.

  1. Royal Northern College of Music – The only UK conservatoire to be a centre for excellence in teaching and learning, but you can still hear the talented students play for free! Orchestral performances take place in the late-60s concert hall, while the RNCM’s best-kept secret is their Wednesday-lunchtime recitals by soloists and smaller ensembles in the calming and charming setting of St Ann’s Church.

  2. Heaton Park – Manchester’s biggest green space, with lovely views both back over town and out to the Pennines. There’s plenty to do whatever your age: a well-equipped children’s playground; rowing boats, woodland walks and cycle paths; even a grand 18th-century mansion and farm. It’s also home to beekeepers, astronomers, trolley-bus enthusiasts and the Commonwealth Bowling Club.

  3. City Airport – Formerly known as Barton Aerodrome, this was the UK’s first purpose-built municipal airport and it’s still in action today. Sit in the beer garden and watch small planes bump excitedly along the grassy runway as they take off and land, and climb up the Art Deco control tower that dates from 1933.

  1. Whitworth Art Gallery – There’s always something worth seeing at this gallery, part of Manchester University; not least the soon-to-be developed building and its parkside location. Recent highlights have been the Subversive Spaces surrealism show, the American Scene prints exhibition and Walls Are Talking, and the varied event programme includes related talks held in the “secret” lecture theatre.

What’s on Yorkshire…

As we’re into April now and as you know there are a couple of long weekends to deal with and the Easter Holidays, I thought today I’d take a look at what’s going on in Yorkshire throughout April. We have three Roomzzz hotels in Leeds and as the hub of the county what better place to position yourself for exploring?

David Hockney: Bigger Trees Near Warter at York Art Gallery – 10th Feb – 22nd June - on loan from Tate, is the largest painting the artist has ever produced. This is your chance to see it as it is the first time the painting has been seen in Britain outside of London.

The Railway Children Weekend 30th April – 2nd May – the steep gradient up the Worth Valley from the Keighley terminus has been a challenge for locomotives ever since the line opened on 15th April 1867. The sound of a steam engine tackling this climb echoes from the steep sides of the valley, while great clouds of steam and smoke add drama to the scene.

Dales Festival of Food & Drink 30th April – 2nd May – If you enjoy food, drink and are looking for a place to go on a bank holiday week end, you need to head for Leyburn in Wensleydale. The three day Dales Festival of Food and Drink is a feast of gastronomic delights with a distinctly local flavour.

Harrogate Spring Flower Show 4th – 17th April – over 90 of the UK’s leading horticultural nuseries, fruit and veg, floristry, crafts and gifts, cookery and food marquee and garden sundries. All on display at the Great Yorkshire Show Ground.

AND don’t forget to follow us on Facebook for Leeds and Manchester… we’ll be drawing the winner of our Friday Favourites competition on Thursday!
