Napoli comes to Leeds
Guests at luxury city centre ‘aparthotel’ Roomzzz could be forgiven for thinking they’ve walked into the laundry this week by mistake. Confused guests need not worry however as it’s just the cast of a new international theatre company Flying Cloud who have been invited to develop the world premiere of ‘NAPOLI’ at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Napoli tells of a fiery wartime love affair which leaves a legacy of cataclysmic sparks that are to span three generations. A tale of passion, sacrifice and identity, it tells of innocence and brutality, of second chances and secrets. Napoli has been produced by the Flying Cloud Theatre Company and the cast and crew will be staying at Roomzzz Aparthotel in Leeds during the residency.

Mark Walton, Head of Roomzzz Aparthotel comments: “We’re delighted to be able to help the Flying Cloud Theatre get off the ground here in Leeds. The psychology and stories behind washing lines is central to the play, so thankfully we have a washing machine in each suite – so the cast can practice hanging up their smalls!”

Leandra Ashton from Flying Cloud Theatre added: “Roomzzz Aparthotel is a fantastic base for the cast and crew whilst we’re in Leeds. It’s like being home from home. On my last theatre job I stayed in over 80 hotels across 32 states of America. I know how important a good place to stay is. Roomzzz Aparthotel has provided everything we need and more. We’re all looking forward to coming back. We thank them for their generosity in helping us out with free accommodation. Being supported by Roomzzz Aparthotel has meant our Arts Council funding goes that bit further.”

-That’s all for now -

Naples comes to Leeds

Posted on: No Comments

Whether it’s a work trip to Manchester or a city break in Leeds, there’s no shortage of showbiz types for you to rub shoulders with in both cities. You just might not expect them to turn up with the intention of washing their underwear.

So it should have surprised a few people when one of the UK’s most innovative theatre companies, Flying Cloud, checked into their Leeds City Roomzzz, whites and all. But rather than searching for the perfect spin cycle, the thespians were in town preparing for their latest performance, Napoli, at The West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Set in an Italy torn apart by fascism and conflict, the story centres on World War Two era Naples, as British troops begin their occupation. Part love story and part social drama, the action unfolds on stage from behind the many washing lines that act as a meeting point for local gossips, not to mention star crossed lovers.

The play will be supported by traditional Neapolitan folk music, to truly transport the audience to the Mediterranean coast. Scheduled for a 2011 UK production, followed by an Italian tour, Flying Cloud hope to follow in the footsteps of past performances and take in theatres from Europe to the U.S.

Our aparthotel provides an ideal place for the board-treading visitors to stay. The perfect marriage of self-catering and serviced accommodation means there’s no better way to unwind after a hard day’s rehearsal than by putting your feet up, some food in the oven, and enjoying a film on our stunningly sharp LCD TVs, with your Roomzzz-mates.

X Factor… it’s Your Choice

Posted on: No Comments

The red carpet is ready. The champagne is chilled. And now ladies across the north are looking forward to the perfect pop party.

Thursday October 28th sees Manchester’s Tiger Tiger succumb to a tuneful takeover as Your Choice, the lifestyle magazine for NHS staff, hosts a Charity Extravaganza. The Printworks venue will see former X Factor finalists Stacey Solomon, Ruth Lorenzo and Jamie ‘Afro’ Archer performing live for fans and charitable supporters alike.

The party hopes to raise funds for six NHS Trusts based in the North West; including Europe’s leading cancer centre, The Christie, and Central Manchester University Hospitals, which incorporates the largest single-site children’s hospital in the UK. Matt Littler and Darren Jeffries will host the party, making it something of a reunion for the pair, best known for their time as Hollyoaks’ loveable likely lads, Max and OB.

Early-bird tickets are available for what promises to be a bright and beautiful bash, at the bargain price of £20, until October 19th. They then jump to £25, though we’d still say it’s worth it to be part of this exclusive event. What’s more, with our Roomzzz Manchester City site just a short cab ride from the venue, there’s very little reason not to get all the girls involved and make it an overnight stay to remember. And with Friday off work, you can enjoy the shopping, salons and sights.

The Northern Championships: Manchester v Leeds III

Posted on: No Comments

No longer Europe’s embarrassing, malnourished sibling, dining in Britain has come a long way in the last 20 years. From business trips to citybreaks, whether in Leeds or Manchester, you’ll have the chance to experience some of the finest restaurants in the country. To help you navigate the gastronomic delights of each tasty town we’ve put them head to head in a cuisine contest…

Round 3 – Restaurants

Leeds

Corner Cafe, 104 Burley Road LS3 1JP

Located near Roomzzz Leeds City West, this understated Indian restaurant offers personal service and bespoke dishes, and a pint from the pub next door.

Mumtaz, Clarence Dock, LS10 1PJ

The original restaurant behind the world’s most famous curry brand is in nearby Bradford, but Leeds’ well situated addition to the chain is well worth a visit too.

Anthony’s Restaurant, 19 Boar Lane, LS1 6EA

Family owned, family run and critically acclaimed. Since opening in 2004 Anthony’s has developed a reputation for the most stylish fine dining in town.

Jamie’s Italian, 35 Park Row, LS1 5JL

Little introduction is necessary, but when the latest of Jamie Oliver’s restaurants landed in this old bank, Leeds’ culinary culture was forever changed.

Salvo’s, 109-115 Otley Road, LS6 3PX

Winning ‘Best Neighbourhood Italian Restaurant’ on Gordon Ramsey’s F Word and serving more than two million customers, over three decades, speaks for itself.

Manchester

The Cedar Tree, 69 Thomas Street, M4 1LQ

A rather bizarre interior marries office-ceiling chic with fake foliage in this backstreet secret famed for its mouthwatering Lebanese menu.

New Samsi, 36-38 Whitworth Street, M1 3NR

Manchester takes oriental food seriously. Options are plentiful, but if you ask locals where to find the best samurai steak or Bento box, it’s invariably New Samsi.

Mr Thomas’ Chop House, 52 Cross Street, M2 7AR

Enjoy al fresco dining in the summer overlooking St Anne’s historic churchyard, or move in from the cold for fine English food in this Victorian tiled pub.

The Lime Tree, Lapwing Lane, M20 2WS

If West Didsbury is Manchester’s culinary capital then this classy modern British establishment is top of the pile, making the trip south of the city well worth it.

Grado, New York Street, M1 4BD

Heathcotes’ reputation for quality, fresh ingredients is legendary, and the Spanish and Tapas menus at Grado are no exception. Nor is the extensive wine list.

The final whistle blows after a close fought battle. We’ve enjoyed drinks in the best bars, nights in the best clubs and, finally, food in the finest restaurants Leeds and Manchester have to offer. Now all that’s left to say is enjoy your stay, and if you find anywhere we’ve missed, feel free to let us know.
