The Northern Championships: Manchester v Leeds I

Posted on: No Comments

50 miles, around a million people and a county border separate Manchester from Leeds. Perfect for short breaks or business trips, both offer the best in culture, sport and shopping. We’d advise a stay at luxury city centre accommodation in either. But if you can’t decide which to stay at first let us help.

Read on for the first of our series of city comparisons where we’ll be pitting them head to head in crucial areas such as sport, arts, food, nightlife etc. After all a little friendly competition never hurt…

Round 1- Nightlife

Leeds

Stinky’s Peephouse, 1 Brick Street, LS9 8AA

Taking its name from a 19th Century San Francisco burlesque club this prominent venue offers multi-tiered dancing and people watching from the balcony.

The Mint Club, 8a Harrison Street, LS1 6PA

This Polo-inspired venue hosts the cream of city centre clubbing, guarantees a great party and a forward thinking soundtrack.

The Elbow Room, 64 Call Lane, LS1 6DT

Part live venue, part bar and part American Pool Hall, there’s no better place to mingle with native scenesters and catch an intimate gig.

The Hi Fi Club, 2 Central Road, LS1 6DE

Winning “Best Nightclub” and “Best Live Music Venue” at the Leeds Bar & Club Awards between 2004 and 2006 speaks volumes. If you’re looking for the jewel in the crown, consider the search over.

Manchester

Sankey’s, Radium Street, M4 6AY

Former mill, winner of DJ Magazine’s 2010 ‘Best Club In the World’ award, huge soundsystem and groundbreaking lighting. Enough said.

Night & Day Café, 26 Oldham Street, M1 1JN

Legendary live music venue, not to mention favourite hangout of touring and local bands, catch tomorrow’s Mercury winners, today.

Matt & Phred’s, 64 Tib Street, M4 1LW

Late night pizza and jazz are perfect together, which is exactly why this backstreet cellar works so well in attracting the cool sophisticates.

The Deaf Institute, 135 Grosvenor Street, M1 7HE

The downstairs bar is decent enough, but the traditional music-hall style room in the attic- complete with smoker’s balcony and raised seating- has quickly established itself as the city’s trendiest live venue.

The bell rings, it’s looking tight and could go either way. As always in a tie-break situation, the judges decide. So if you’ve got any recommendations that can sway them, now would be a good time to speak up…

Celebs and the cities

Manchester and Leeds may seem a million miles away from Manhattan and LA, but appearances can be deceiving. As we’ve discovered, our Roomzzz are regularly housing stars from the region and beyond.

Our unique approach to accommodation has already caught the eye of major sporting figures, no doubt in part thanks to our opulent Suites reminding them of their own exclusive pads. Our Manchester City site has welcomed world class snooker talent to town, though the appeal seems to be too much even for locals to resist, as reservations from members of both City and United’s entourage have shown.

Down the M62 and over the Pennines, Leeds pulls in visitors by the thousands each week. Until recently it was the UK’s favourite city, and the fastest growing metropolis in Europe. It’s big on shopping and bigger on nightlife, but that’s only half the story. A huge football heritage means the city speaks sport, and stars from teams like Leeds United have enjoyed Grab and Go Breakfasts after staying with us.

Whether you opt for a Grand Studio or Emperor Suite each comes equipped with a large screen LCD TV, but that’s not where our relationship with the small screen stops. Both Yorkshire and Granada TV studios are located close to our city centre sites, which explains why famous faces from institutions like Coronation Street and Emmerdale are no strangers to us.

Of course, there are autograph moments to be had outside our walls, and we strongly advise you take advantage of our prime locations, with some of the country’s best bars, boutiques, restaurants, museums and clubs right on your doorstep. Everyone from bands and actors to politicians and cultural leaders makes Leeds and Manchester regular destinations for performances, conferences and relaxation. So it’s easy to imagine who you might spot on your next stay with us.

Roomzzz unveils new look

We’ve undergone a massive six figure investment in order to strengthen our brand, make it easier for our guests to understand our offering and help us further spread the word about aparthotels and we’d like to share the news with you too.

As you may know, we currently operate four luxury aparthotels – a cross between boutique hotels and serviced apartments – and have invested heavily in the company to make them even better for all our guests.

This includes internal improvements such as centralising the booking service and bringing in an experienced new management team who have been working within the hotel industry for over 30 years collectively, with a number of leading brands.

This new investment comes as we prepare to unveil the freshly refurbished Leeds Central aparthotel which will be known as Leeds City West, Leeds 361 will be known as Leeds Headingley.

We’ve had a successful few years, creating four distinctive and luxury aparthotels within four years across two cities – meaning we’ve grown faster in the sector than our bigger rivals. With this new investment we are putting the building blocks into place to allow it to continue to grow even faster. We aim to have 10 hotels within three years. We’ve also increased our team with both new and seasoned hotel professions in order to continue to offer a premium service to our guests.

We’ve had some great feedback from our customers on all aspects of the aparthotels but particularly with regard to the new grab and go breakfasts that offers customers a selection of fresh pastries and fruit to either eat in their rooms or to take with them on departure. This was logical expansion of the pantry system which we already operate – this allows guests to purchase ready made meals, snacks and drinks.

We pride ourselves on keeping to the founding ethos of a ‘luxury home from home’, and welcome customers to stay for any length of time, from a single night to a full year. The blending of a boutique hotel’s style with the convenience and privacy of a serviced apartments means that our apartments can cater for the busy modern businessman – who is forced to work away from home to a family who have come away for a leisurely city-break.
